[~harisekhon]: It is possible to set and unset config variables through JDBC that can be set/unset
through the command line. To do so, you'd need to do an execute statement with "set config.var
= value". To set the scratch dir, you can do the following in JDBC,

statement.execute("set hive.exec.scratchdir = /tmp/mydir");

Note that this property is set for the particular JDBC connection.
