Just checked, and the name BINARY in JDBC and standard SQL corresponds to a fixed-length binary
type with a specified precision:

But I'm fine with us using it to mean something slightly different, and matching thrift.

Regarding the conversions, it's fine to break it out into multiple patches; open follow-up
JIRA's linked to this one.  I think the hex one will be very useful for debugging.
