Subject [jira] Commented: (HIVE-352) Make Hive support column based storage
Date Wed, 25 Mar 2009 20:13:54 GMT

Zheng Shao commented on HIVE-352:

@Yongqiang: The reason that we do that "lazy" operation is that there will be "CASE", "IF"
and short-circuiting boolean operations which will allow us to skip different columns for
different rows.

We need a new top-level StructObjectInspector which can deserialize the column only when getField/getStructFieldData
is called on that column. For all levels below that, we can reuse the current ObjectInspector.

> Hive does a great job on raw row oriented storage. In this issue, we will enhance hive
to support column based storage.
> Acctually we have done some work on column based storage on top of hdfs, i think it will
need some review and refactoring to port it to Hive.
