Simply an entry point. IOW, mvn compile/install should work
out of the box, but it is completely fine to use any kind
of plugins.

I'm wondering how long time ago was it? Maven is still not perfect at all,
but Maven 3 has removed quite a bit of pain from the day-to-day life.
