Dave,

Please find a slightly reworked version of your code attached to the issue. I took liberty
of making a number of changes in order to make the code more consistent with the rest of HttpClient.
I started splitting the code into API and impl parts and generified some public interfaces.
I also converted all test cases to JUnit 4 (by the way the test coverage in truly impressive).

If I hear no objections, I'll commit the code tonight (~20:00 GMT)
