That should help, but the variable that holds the synchronized NVP
object reference also needs to be safely shared between threads. If
the reference is stored by one thread and referenced by another, in
the absence of synch. (or volatile or final fields) the referencing
thread may not see the value stored by the other.

However, in this case only the name(s) seem to be null - and I assume
the values are correct - so this is less likely as a cause.
