Sorry, never mind.  I was confusing isOpen with isStale(). 

My preference would be for the first patch.  It does introduce a small API
change, but HttpConnection is essentially only used by HttpClient classes.  A
quick poll on the dev list would be good, but my guess is that virtualy no-one
uses HttpConnection directly.
