To my knowledge it does not. Both schemes are handled similarly, as they
both involve one challenge and one response.

That's bad. If I do manage to reproduce the problem I may not be able to
fix it

Actually my test also included proxy authentication (successful and

[DEBUG] header - -<< "Proxy-Authenticate: Basic realm="squid"[\r][\n]"
[DEBUG] header - ->> "CONNECT testhost:443 HTTP/1.1"
[DEBUG] header - ->> "Proxy-Authorization: Basic Y3JhcDpjcmFw[\r][\n]"
