It sounds like a combination of inefficient memory allocation and a large number of threads.
 I think 
some kind of optimization in getResponseBody() is warranted, but exactly what I'm not sure
yet.  My 
suggestion would be to wait until we have a better way to benchmark HttpClient, and then do
some 
"real world" testing to see what's best.  For the time being I think getResponseBodyAsStream()
is the 
solution.
