It turned out that Christian's patch broke 3 test cases. In fact there's nothing
wrong with the patch itself. It is just SimpleHttpConnection stuff is too
flacky: its isResponseAvailable method does not seem to be able to produce
correct results. I worked the problem around in all three cases. 

It is time we replaced SimpleHttpConnection with something a bit more robust

I am +1 to commit Christian's patch
