Laura, HttpConnection can safely be used on its own. There's even a little demo 
app in our sample directory of how that can be done:

What is important to understand here is that as long as HttpConnection is used 
directly one should not be using (or should be extremely careful using) 
HttpClient's connection pooling mechanisms. I believe this is a fair 
requirement.
