Please take a look at the getSplits() methods in:

hbase-server/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/mapreduce/TableInputFormat.java
hbase-server/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/mapred/TableInputFormatBase.java
