Thanks Dough.

J-D the link you forwarded is not of much use for me. It doesn't work for
the Lion OSX.
By using ulimit -n I am able to set the value to 1024 but at the end if I
restart the machine it goes back to  original 256. Don't know how to make
this change permanent
