Sorry - I misunderstood your question. I thought that you wanted to fetch
only one column. 
We fetch a reference column for our scans (which is very small):

Scan scan = new Scan();
scan.addColumn("family".getBytes(), "column".getBytes());
table.getScanner(scan);
