Subject [jira] [Commented] (HBASE-17379) Lack of synchronization in CompactionPipeline#getScanners()
Date Wed, 28 Dec 2016 12:19:58 GMT

Eshcar Hillel commented on HBASE-17379:
---------------------------------------

I agree that using a read write lock would be a valid solution.
However thread safe data structures are usually optimized to work better than just using a
coarse-grain lock, even a read-write lock.
It is also important to carefully read the documentation of each implementation and see the
tradeoffs it exhibits, and choose the one that is best for the use case.

> The cause is in CompactionPipeline#getScanners() where there is no synchronization around
iterating pipeline.
> The code causing ConcurrentModificationException:
> {code}
>     for (Segment segment : this.pipeline) {
> {code}
> was introduced by HBASE-17081
