Sounds like a plan. Would you be willing to do this? If so, the shell should gracefully fall
back to doing things manually if the new admin API isn't available, if a newer shell is talking
to an older master. I think it's fine to print a warning in the old manual truncate shell
code that ACLs won't be preserved, so there's no need to implement both the backport and carrying
ACLs forward in the shell code.
