Agreed. I'm happy to share my experiment (in a more appropriate place than this Netty ticket

Yes, in the long term. My understanding is that the OpenJDK is moving to make some of these
facilities more accessible. The timeline appears to be for Java9 or later, as far as I can
tell. I think it would be reasonable to consider use of Unsafe for any short-medium term implementation.
