Not on JDK7. :)
In fact it makes it slightly *slower*\(?) Seems bizarre, but in the microbenchmark is does.
In all cases I made sure the reference in the ArrayList are actually used, so that the compiler
cannot simply optimize them away.

I had also tried a local stack reference rather than a member, that makes no difference.

Didn't try on JDK6 (don't have it on any of my machines at home anymore).

I did some microbenchmarks and found that
