Subject [jira] [Reopened] (HBASE-9182) Allow non-admin users to list all table names

Lars Hofhansl reopened HBASE-9182:
----------------------------------

I just noticed that this break backward compatibility in 0.94.
Here's what I see in a new (0.94.12) client connecting to an old (0.94.7) cluster:
{code}
ERROR: org.apache.hadoop.ipc.RemoteException: java.io.IOException: java.lang.NoSuchMethodException:
org.apache.hadoop.hbase.ipc.HMasterInterface.getTableNames()
	at java.lang.Class.getMethod(Class.java:1624)
	at org.apache.hadoop.hbase.ipc.SecureRpcEngine$Server.call(SecureRpcEngine.java:293)
	at org.apache.hadoop.hbase.ipc.HBaseServer$Handler.run(HBaseServer.java:1426)
{code}

I'd suggest we roll this back from 0.94, and open a new jira for a backward compatible backport.
You OK with that [~apurtell]?

> HBASE-8692, prevents users retrieving table descriptors they don't have admin access
to. As a side-effect it also prevents non-admin users from being able to list tables in the
CLI. One proposal to fix this is to provide an API in HMaster which returns a list of table
names only.
