I'm not sure of how HBase manages audit log events but in HDFS we use the UGI object associated with the call: https://github.com/apache/hadoop-common/blob/release-2.0.5-alpha/hadoop-hdfs-project/hadoop-hdfs/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hdfs/server/namenode/FSNamesystem.java#L5270
