What is this about:

LOG.info("Compaction failed at original callstack: " + formatStackTrace(ex));

What not just:

LOG.info("Compaction....", ex);

Your formatStackTrace doesn't seem to add anything?

Do you intend the fixes in ExploringCompactionPolicy?
