I just wanna say I'm very strongly in favor of this change, but I just want it to be done
in such a way that clients can determine what variation of the protocol the server speaks,
so they can adjust themselves.  This way a single {{.jar}} can talk to different HBase versions
with no code change and no configuration setting.
