I'm not sure if there is a JIRA yet, but some guys at FB did a bunch of work on doing per-family
metrics.  They did work to dynamically generate new metric names, etc.

I think we could work on this at the same time we start to think about using the info for
better load balancing and such.  This could obviously come first.
