The 503 errors are internal to EC2 and there is little we can do about them except perhaps
roll back and try again. I think perhaps you and I were testing around the same time as I
got these this afternoon as well for a while.

"Lost connection" means SSH did not succeed, probably because it is not fully/properly configured
yet: you do not have a keypair named "root" and/or have not configured the path to the ssh
private key file in hbase-ec2-env.sh.
