For what it's worth, compact/framed will not work for me.  I think it should be used for performance
testing and for internal use, but using compact/framed effectively limits you to only C++,
Java, and Ruby.  This severely limits the utility of using Thrift (for instance, C# and Python
are my target languages for HBase).  All of Thrift's languages support the TBinaryProtocol,
only those three support the TCompactProtocol (though more are being worked on, they're just
not there yet).
