Are you looking at the stubs by accident?

The VM-specifc 'kernel' types are provided as compile-against stubs in
jre/lib/boot/luni-kernel-stubs.jar and security-kernel-stubs.jar.  The
actual implementations are in VM-specific subdirectories in jre/bin,
e.g. jre/bin/default/kernel.jar
