If the gcc backend (VM point of view)/frontend (gcc point of view) is a
separate program then this GPL obligation only applies to it, not the client
of the backend...
This could also be an intermediate solution. (have something that works with
a well defined back-end in GPL, rewrite it in apache license and enhance it
later)

Sure it does, we would be writing just a front-end. Which in case is not an
option for Harmony, since such code must be GPL.
Does anybody know if GCC allows such a thing?
