Subject Status updates and distribution integration
Date Tue, 10 May 2005 12:28:27 GMT
Hi all,

There seems to be not enough information about the current status of the
different efforts working together for Harmony. If you haven't seen the
following presentations and articles yet, please take a little time to
review them.

GNU Classpath overview - November 2004
http://www.klomp.org/mark/classpath/GNUClasspathSummit/

Latest GNU Classpath, gcj, kaffe, apache, ikvm, cacao, java-gnome, and friends
development meeting - 26/27 February 2005
http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath/events/escape_fosdem05.html
(Lots of reports and status updates)

GCJ - past, present, and future - April 6, 2005
http://lwn.net/Articles/130796/
(Focus on GCJ 4 as distributed with GCC 4.0)

For some overview of what the different GNU/Linux distributions will be
supporting in their next releases see:

Fedora new package list for FC4:
http://people.redhat.com/sopwith/new-packages.txt
Notice the large number of new packages written in the java programming
language supported by gcj and gcj-java-compat. It would be nice if
someone could make a live CD from some of the major packages to show off
what is already possible. Fedora Core 4 development really is a bit
ahead of the other distributions atm.

Debian GNU/Linux support for packages writting in the java programming language
http://java.debian.net/index.php/MovingJavaToMain

Ubuntu Free Software java integration page:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/JavaIntegration
(Lots of background information about the status of the different
efforts and how and why Ubuntu decides to package things.)

Cheers,

Mark
