Thanks for trying to fix this.  I wasn't really expecting you too!  It didn't quite work so
I've made some further changes in r595021.

I also changed the #if defined(FREEBSD) to #if defined(LINUX) since Linux is the special case
and otherwise we'd end up having #if defined(FREEBSD) || defined(AIX) || defined(MACOSX) ||
...

Hope that is okay.
