Subject [jira] Commented: (HARMONY-4868) [drlvm][jdwp] Intermittent failure of JDWP unit tests RefTypeIDTest, ClassObjectIDTes

Ivan Popov commented on HARMONY-4868:

I noticed the same problem rarely occured with running these tests against RI on Windows.

It seems the root problem is in bad behavior of socket implementation on Windows, namely in
closing socket connection.
In this particular case the test class sends message "continue" to debuggee class via socket
connection and then closes socket. If debuggee class at this moment is reading from socket,
it receives this message and finishes successfully. However, if debuggee class starts reading
from socket connection _after_ test has closed it at its own side, debuggee class does not
receive sent message, but gets exception "java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection
abort: recv failed" instead. And due to bad design of the test, this causes infinite loop
of reading message and test fails with timeout.

A short fix would be to change synchronization algorithm in the test, so this exception won't
cause infinite loop and tests will pass. However, better way is to solve problem with bad
behavior of socket implementation on Windows.

> Components: DRLVM
> Environment: Windows x86
> Reporter: Eugene S. Ostrovsky
> The following tests intermittently fail on runs for the whole JDWP unit tests suite:
> org.apache.harmony.jpda.tests.jdwp.MultiSession.RefTypeIDTest
> org.apache.harmony.jpda.tests.jdwp.MultiSession.ClassObjectIDTest
> I've made 3 runs of JDWP suite and got the following results:
> RefTypeIDTest - failed 2 times
> ClassObjectIDTest - failed 1 time
> The failure doesn't reproduce when running one test separately.
