Vasily Zakharov commented on HARMONY-4831:

No, I can't provide a real reproducer now. The issue was detected while running EUT, and the
configurations the bug appears in are rather complex. However, the fact that everything works
fine with jdk/jre/bin/javaw.exe and doesn't work with jdk/bin/javaw.exe moves us to look for
the differences between those two launchers, and between java.exe and javaw.exe, and wrong
application type is the first visible thing here.

As an indicator usable while creating and testing a patch, I could propose the following scenario.

Use this simple class:

public class Test {
    public static void main(String argv[]) {

Run it as:

java Test > log

And then check if log file exists and contains the word SUCCESS (I mark these cases "+" below)
or not ("-").

Make sure to remove the log file before each run!

Here's what we have on RI:

+ jdk/bin/java
- jdk/bin/javaw
+ jdk/jre/bin/java
- jdk/jre/bin/javaw

And here's what we have on Harmony:

+ jdk/bin/java
+ jdk/bin/javaw
+ jdk/jre/bin/java
- jdk/jre/bin/javaw

Note that on RI both javaw launchers are pure windows applications, without console at all
- their output streams can't be redirected, log file is not even created. On Harmony this
is only true for JRE launcher, not for JDK one.

Note that the problem is clearly launcher specific, as it appears the same on both DRLVM and

> Patch to HARMONY-4420 introduced new jdk/bin/javaw.exe file, that is identical to jdk/bin/java.exe
> However, javaw.exe must not be a copy of console application java.exe, it must be a windows
application, much like jdk/jre/bin/javaw.exe, which is much different from jdk/jre/bin/java.exe.
Console applications handle streams differently than windows ones, and these sometimes causes
errors when trying to redirect the streams.
> This issue is a blocker for HARMONY-4789.
