[~yufeigu] - Right, the null check can be abandoned (I'll upload a new patch when the rest
of the questions are cleared).

Regarding your second question: I'm using a new instance to trim down the state as much as
possible (also, I had to provide a non-null reference, otherwise an exception is thrown at
the line you quoted from createAndPopulateNewRMApp()).

The store also retains this information for completed applications to serve their status to
REST, WebUI, Java and CLI clients. We don't need all the information we store today to serve
application status; for instance, we don't need the {{ApplicationSubmissionContext}}.
