Sangjin Lee commented on YARN-4183:
-----------------------------------

This is still very much an open-ended discussion. I recognize that trying to support enabling
multiple versions may be pretty tricky and far-reaching. It would be great if we can pull
that off, but if it leads to other negative consequences, we as a group may decide not to
pursue it. For one, I know this would mean a pretty significant refactoring on the work for
YARN-2928 as there are many places where we assume this is a binary choice (mutually exclusive).

> When enabling just the Generic History Server and not the timeline server, the system
metrics publisher will not publish the events to the timeline store as it checks if the timeline
server and system metrics publisher are enabled before creating a timeline client.
> To make it work, if the timeline service flag is turned on, it will force every yarn
application to get a delegation token.
> Instead of checking if timeline service is enabled, we should be checking if application
history server is enabled.
