3) seems overdone
Between 1) and 2) I would pick 2 since it makes lives of future developers easier :) Also, it looks like the lack of error exit code for isAlive is a good thing to fix since the current behavior is inconsistent. The same change would need to be made on branch-1-win too, if you choose to this approach.
