Grt. In that case why don't we (I will make the changes if approved):

2a) document instantiateFunc behavior
2b) fixup the subclasses of evalspec per Utkarsh's suggestion
2c) have "getComparator" throw an exception if this.comparator == null
What do you want to throw, runtime exception with appropriate message?
