So far I'm on another Hadoop wild goose chase. I made another attempt
this time with the -Ddfs.checksum.type=CRC32 option set. I had a look
at the hdfs data node logs on both the cdh5 receiving cluster
datanode, and the cdh4 source cluster datanode.

Here are the logs from the cdh5 datanode:
