I used the following command under these directories:
hadoop-mapreduce-project/hadoop-mapreduce-client/
hadoop-mapreduce-project/hadoop-mapreduce-client/hadoop-mapreduce-client-app

mvn -am -DskipTests package

Both completed successfully.
