'hadoop hdfs dfs -ls' is not correct.
You should use 'hdfs dfs -ls <path>' to access HDFS.

FYI: It's preferred to use user@hadoop.apache.org if you have a 
question. hdfs-issues@ is to track HDFS JIRA changes.
