Hello Will, thanks for taking the time and reporting this!

Lion's default JVM had a few issues with Hadoop, could you eliminate those potentials out?
HADOOP-7489 is one.

SSH is not a requirement though. It'd be great if you could also pull out some logs from the
eclipse runtime (am not sure how to, perhaps there's a view for application logs), to know
what exactly the issue seems to be when the plugin tries to connect.
