Since MAPREDUCE-3159 and MAPREDUCE-3162 have now gone in, I have upmerged and cleaned up this patch.

I have also run the MR test suite multiple times and made sure all tests pass in order to confirm that there has been no regression in the last several days.

Requesting for a final +1 and commit.
