Greg Roelofs commented on MAPREDUCE-377:
----------------------------------------

Is this issue still relevant, given its two-year slumber and the existence of Avro? (I've
merely skimmed the discussion, so I don't know if the latter is actually relevant. Lack of
progress and/or continued interest seems like it is, though.)

> Protocol Buffers (http://code.google.com/p/protobuf/) are a way of encoding data in a
compact binary format. This issue is to write a ProtocolBuffersSerialization to support using
Protocol Buffers types in MapReduce programs, including an example program. This should probably
go into contrib.
