(was: Hi Matei,

How is everything? My name is James Staley and I understand that you are a
third year Ph.D student at UC Berkeley. I took a notice to your interest in
Hadoop and I wanted to see if we could set up a time to talk. I'm working
with quite a few companies that are interested in people with Hadoop and
large scale distributed systems experience. What time works best for you?

> Ability to pause/resume tasks
> -----------------------------
> Key: MAPREDUCE-457
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MAPREDUCE-457
> Project: Hadoop Map/Reduce
> Issue Type: New Feature
> Reporter: Chris Smith
> Assignee: Chris Smith
> Priority: Minor
> Attachments: hadoop-pausing.8.trunk.patch
> It would be nice to be able to pause (and subsequently resume) tasks that are currently
running, in order to allow tasks from higher priority jobs to execute. At present it is quite
easy for long-running tasks from low priority jobs to block a task from a newer high priority
job, and there is no way to force the execution of the high priority task without killing
the low priority jobs.
