Edward Capriolo commented on HIVE-959:
--------------------------------------

>>But should hive compatibility with older versions of hadoop be maintained ?

I think definitely a big yes. I do not think we should abandon older versions of Hadoop for
the newest version, which is not even 100% complete yet. By 100% I mean not everything in
the mapred packages have been fully ported to the mapreduce packages yet e.g. Is MultiFileInput
format committed yet?

Currently 18.3 is still considered the stable branch. I do not think we should abandon it
for 0.20. Hopefully we should be able to auto detect the version and either build shims or
patch the source pre-compile, or branch.

> Affects Versions: 0.5.0

> Hadoop 0.20 has a lot of new interfaces including MapReduce etc.Hive should move to the
new interface.
> Hive won't be compatible with earlier hadoop versions after this change, so we might
want to wait till hive 0.5 is branched out first.
