Subject [jira] Created: (HIVE-109) 'location' clause for table creation should only be allowed for external tables

'location' clause for table creation should only be allowed for external tables
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: HIVE-109
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-109
             Project: Hadoop Hive
          Issue Type: Bug
            Reporter: Joydeep Sen Sarma

currently - the code does not by and large distinguish between external and internal tables.
one clear distinction though is that storage for external tables is managed outside hive.
this leads to consequences like HIVE-86 - so that hive does not mess around with tables whose
storage is managed externally. however - currently - we allow users to specify location for
internal tables - which is confusing and could lead to data being deleted in external folders.
we should not allow this.
