I'm pretty sure we stopped shipping the native library at all in the tarball release.  It
just doesn't make sense, since the tarball is supposed to be platform-independent.  BigTop
provides a bunch of rpms, debs, and other platform-specific things that do what you want...
I think that would be the thing to check, if you want to avoid using a commerical open-source
distro.
