Alejandro Abdelnur commented on HDFS-6134:
------------------------------------------

[~lmccay], it is great that you agree that the proposed changes makes things more secure.

Answering your bullets:

#1. this is the first use case in Hadoop
#2. no, the client does not have acces to the EZ keyVersion
#3. the KeyProvider own the decryption of the DEK ,the client does not have the EZ key

What is being proposed is the equivalent of KMIP's key-wrapping functionality. What makes
the system more secure is the fact that the EZ keyVersion is never exposed to HDFS, nor HDFS
clients. And the DEK for the file is never exposed to HDFS NN.

> Because of privacy and security regulations, for many industries, sensitive data at rest
must be in encrypted form. For example: the healthcare industry (HIPAA regulations), the
card payment industry (PCI DSS regulations) or the US government (FISMA regulations).
> This JIRA aims to provide a mechanism to encrypt HDFS data at rest that can be used transparently
by any application accessing HDFS via Hadoop Filesystem Java API, Hadoop libhdfs C library,
or WebHDFS REST API.
> The resulting implementation should be able to be used in compliance with different regulation
requirements.
