Suresh Srinivas commented on HDFS-5709:
---------------------------------------

I am -1 on automatically renaming the directory.

+1 for printing a more meaningful error message that says ".snapshot directory is reserved
file name in the release you are upgrading to. Please rollback to the old release and rename
the directories and make changes to the applications that rely on existence of such directories,
followed by upgrade to this release."

> Key: HDFS-5709

> Project: Hadoop HDFS
> Issue Type: Improvement
> Components: namenode

> Right now in trunk, upgrade fails messily if the old fsimage or edits refer to a directory
named ".snapshot". We should at least print a better error message (which I believe was the
original intention in HDFS-4666), and [~atm] proposed automatically renaming these files and
directories.
