Subject [jira] [Commented] (HDFS-4097) provide CLI support for create/delete/list snapshots

Todd Lipcon commented on HDFS-4097:

bq. That is true. Would we expect a user or an application to contact administrator to take
a snapshot on demand? That is the reason currently admins can allow snapshots for directories.
Users can take snapshots.

In my experience managing storage for a university computer science department, snapshots
were taken on a regular schedule for all user volumes. Users could not request snapshots of
the admins, but snapshots were frequent enough (and retained long enough) that they didn't
care. In fact in working for this department for a couple years, I don't think I ever learned
how to manually make a snapshot, because the automated (hourly) schedule was enough.

Generally users want snapshots _after_ they make a mistake and want to rollback -- not _before_
they make a mistake. If they knew they were about to make a mistake they would probably just
decide not to do so :) I certainly helped users restore items from recent snapshots dozens
of times.
