@Allen regarding using JARs bundled in Linux. I would not go that far for the following reasons:

#1 Not all the JARs that Hadoop uses are avail as part of the OSes. 
#2 Not all the OSes ship the same set of JARs. 
#3 The versions that may be avail as part of the OSes may not be the ones Hadoop uses.
#4 Because #1, #2 & #3 packaging in Hadoop-land would be quite complicated if not unmanageable.

Furthermore, I'd say that if we ever do something like that, IMO it would be that Hadoop pulls
the JARs it needs from Maven repos at install time.
