Tsz Wo (Nicholas), SZE commented on HDFS-2316:
----------------------------------------------

It seems that the Http spec does not force us to use Range header; see [14.35.2 Range Retrieval
Requests|http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec14.html#sec14.35]
{quote}
A server MAY ignore the Range header. However, HTTP/1.1 origin servers and intermediate
caches ought to support byte ranges when possible, since Range supports efficient recovery
from partially failed transfers, and supports efficient partial retrieval of large entities.

> We current have hftp for accessing HDFS over HTTP. However, hftp is a read-only FileSystem
and does not provide "write" accesses.
> In HDFS-2284, we propose to have webhdfs for providing a complete FileSystem implementation
for accessing HDFS over HTTP. The is the umbrella JIRA for the tasks.
